Tour de France: Meurisse: "Disappointed to miss out on the polkadot jersey"
The riders received a royal welcome at the start of the first stage of the Tour de France (2.UWT, 6-28/07) next to the Royal Palace. On the first line at the start, Xandro Meurisse, with a mission to join the first breakaway of this Tour de France. The advantage of the four man breakaway with the young Belgian rider stabilized around three minutes towards the Muur van Geraardsbergen and the Bosberg, where a fierce battle for the GPM points was fought. After a close defeat to Van Avermaet on the Muur, Tour debutant Meurisse scored maximum points on the Bosberg. He takes second position in the mountains classification at the end of the first day.
The peloton was focused on the intermediate sprint caught the remaining three escapees with 75 kilometers to go. Only the French rider Rossetto tried to avoid a bunch sprint with a long solo. The peloton speeded towards the finish line with a slight slope in the centre of Brussels. Mike Teunissen was the fastest in an exciting sprint, with Andrea Pasqualon finishing 13th.

« Even if it's not a shame to be beaten by Van Avermaet on his own terrain, I'm dissapointed to miss out on the polkadot jersey. He accelerated gradually on the Muur van Geraardsbergen and I was able to respond, but didn't manage to pass him on the tortuous climb. We share the top position in the mountains classification, but the rules say that the Muur was the decisive climb. On Monday the next mountain points will be distributed, I'll get another chance. I was impressed by the sportive experience during my first ever Tour stage, it was incredible from the start. »
