Tour de France - Wanty-Gobert stage 2 [08-07-19 08:25 by staff GoNBike.com]

Tour de France: Backaert : "Mentally complicated"

The second stage in the Tour de France (2.WT, 6-28/07) crossed Brussels via its most beautiful thoroughfares, in the form of a team time trial. The trail relying the Royal Palace and the Atomium, passing next to Bois de la Cambre and the largest boulevards in Brussels, was made for specialists. Jumbo-Visma won the time trial, with Wanty-Gobert finishing the 27.6 kilometer course in 30:55, or averaging more than 53km/h. This Monday, the stage starts in Binche, city of the head office of our partner Wanty.

Frederik Backaert :
« It was a pity that Aimé De Gendt had a mechanical with his first time trial bike in the start zone. His second time trial bike was refused moments before the start, because of non-conformity, although he's riding in the same position since the start of the year. Consequently, he rode the time trial on his traditional road bike. It was difficult mentally for our collective, because we had to chance plans at the very last moment. Aimé was an important element for our time trial, because he's very powerful on the time trial bike, and consequently he couldn't pull in the beginning of the effort against the clock. »

« We lost quite some time in this adventure, and we also managed one corner in the final badly. Without this, we could have done a lot better and gain some seconds, because we dispose of a solid collective. It were details, but we keep the same motivation for the continuation! Ik had an excellent feeling and I'll try, as from tomorrow, to be part of the breakaway! »
