After an exciting start to the 2010 FIM Motocross World Championship last weekend in Bulgaria, the Rockstar Teka Suzuki World MX1 and Teka Suzuki Europe World MX2 teams are now set for the second round of 15 that will take place at the sandy Mantova circuit in Italy this coming Sunday. The Grand Prix of Lombardia is hosted by the circuit that traditionally opens the winter pre-season period with the busy Starcross International every February. The track is markedly different to the one found last weekend at Sevlievo with the shallow Italian sand forging a flat and very jumpy course within a semi-stadium setting, thanks to the grassy banks on three sides (with the paddock on the fourth). A tight and winding layout leaves little chance for respite for the riders, so a very physical prospect lies in store. The weather forecast currently shows bright conditions with a small chance of showers on Sunday, so the sandy terrain could become even rougher with some rainfall over the weekend. Rockstar Teka Suzuki World MX1's Clement Desalle secured his first podium for the factory team last Sunday with third position and enters the Grand Prix of Lombardia - the first of two sandy races back-to-back with a trip to Valkenswaard in Holland taking place two weeks after the Italian jaunt - having taken a rostrum finish at Mantova two months ago. "It is quite a different track, smaller and tighter than Bulgaria with its own style, but I like it," said the 20-year-old Belgian who is third in the fledgling championship standings. "There are many jumps and there is a lot to do. Physically I feel very good and I know I can be faster and better than in my motos last Sunday. My goal is to keep building up and to be consistent through the season." Steve Ramon made a confident charge in the Bulgarian second moto on the RM-Z450WS after discovering some beneficial modifications to his suspension set-up. The former World Champion finished third in Moto2 and fifth overall. Ramon's best result at Mantova was also a fifth place, back in 2007. "Mantova is sandy but if the weather is good then it is pretty hard underneath," he said. "It is a hard and physical track that makes you work. It will be another tough GP after the sun and bumps in Bulgaria. Mantova is not that fast and there are a lot of jumps but it is not easy. We did the pre-season International there and I had a good set-up and feeling round the track so that's a positive thing to travel with." Teka Suzuki Europe World MX2 can also feel confident going to Mantova after the excellent showing Ken Roczen made at Sevlievo and through the sheer weight of training and testing done by the team in the sand of Lommel in Belgium over the winter. The 15-year-old German was superb to fight with World Champion Marvin Musquin and earned the runner-up position overall. The Bulgarian Grand Prix was an encouraging way to start the championship for the German crew as Arnaud Tonus took fifth on his debut and Roczen gave the RM-Z250 its first pole position on Saturday. 18-year-old Tonus was third at the Starcross in February, therefore is accustomed to the demands of the Mantova leaps.
