VENETO 2020: UCI DELEGATES HAVE BEGUN THEIR SURVEY

Today they inspected the final circuit in Vicenza and the last km. The delegation met with the city’s Mayor.

Vicenza (VI), 29 March, 2017 – This afternoon saw the official start to three days of survey inspections. UCI delegates will be guests on the territory until Friday. Their task is to get a better idea of the bid presented by Veneto to host the road cycling World Championships in 2020.

The UCI has sent three delegates: the Austrian ex-pro Thomas Rohregger, along with technicians Matthew Knight and Kevin Benjamin. The trio was accompanied on the field by the committee’s Vice President Moreno Nicoletti, who designed the route, and by Stefano Di Santo, official cartographer who has already collaborated with the Giro d’Italia, who observed, snapped photos, took notes and asked questions. The visit started in the heart of the city with the inspection of the last km, which leads to the planned finish line in the very central Viale Roma. Here the delegates were able to enjoy Vicenza’s open air parlour against the fabulous backdrop offered by the first real spring-like day.

Obviously, the President of the Veneto 2020 promotion committee Claudio Pasqualin played the perfect host, backed up by his VP Moreno Nicoletti, along with Councillor Alessandro Belluscio and Consultant to the committee Angelo Zomegnan. The President of the Italian Cycling Federation Renato Di Rocco was also on hand to greet the delegates on this important visit, to show how much all of the Italians that pedal believe in making Veneto’s iridescent dream come true.

“Clearly for us this is a very important phase. According to procedure the time has come in which the UCI sends its delegates into the field to get a first-hand look at the validity of what was presented by our committee in the dossier and scrupulously set up in all its parts during all these months of exhaustive work. We believe we are ready to be able to respond thoroughly to any compliances required of us as far as concerns the route, logistics, services and all the other demands involved with a World Championship event,” explains President Claudio Pasqualin.

The delegation was greeted at Provincial Headquarters by Achille Variati, Mayor of the city and President of the Province of Vicenza. He was accompanied by sport selectman Umberto Nicolai, who reiterated the full support of the municipal administration and of the city for the project and for the promotion committee.

“Vicenza has always been a city with an affinity for sport and for cycling in particular; looking at the recent past it’s impossible not to remember the extraordinary spectacles of the two stages in the Giro d’Italia in 2013 and 2015. Our citizens may be weary at first, but once they get something in their heads they want to carry it all the way through. Therefore, the goal is for this World Championship dream to become a reality. President Di Rocco has said that the last event in Italy, the one in Florence, was the best World Championship of all time; we hope that this record can be beaten by Vicenza and the Veneto with the 2020 edition,” explained the Mayor during his speech.

Afterward the delegation, always accompanied by Moreno Nicoletti and Stefano Di Santo, went on a reconnaissance mission on the entire, 20.750 km-long, final circuit, which features key points like the climbs on Monte Berico (1.150 km with an average gradient of 7% and a maximum of 11%) and on Via Costacolonna (1.700 km with an average gradient of 7.1% and a maximum of 13%) before the arrival at the iridescent finish line in Viale Roma.

The inspection will continue tomorrow with the institutional visit to the Venetian Regional Headquarters and the inspection of the in-line part, which covers about 80 km between Venice and Vicenza passing through Padua. They will also visit what should be the location for the grand depart of the reigning men’s elite race: Piazza San Marco (Saint Mark’s Square) in Venice.
