LBL - Baugnies shines with breakaway effort [22-04-18 20:52 by staff GoNBike.com]
Jérôme Baugnies shines with long breakaway in monument
Jérôme Baugnies rode 230 kilometers in the front in Liège-Bastogne-Liège (1.WT, 22/04). Together with eight companions he jumped away at the start of La Doyenne. The maximum lead of the early break was limited to six minutes. Baugnies had excellent climber legs and set the pace on the many Ardennes climbs.

He reduced the group to four riders and in the final he accelerated once more. On the mythical climb of La Redoute he jumped away from the remaining break. Baugnies completed another 15 kilometers solo and was caught close to the foot of the Roche aux Faucons after a break of 230 kilometers.

Guillaume Martin was surrounded by teammates for a long time in the peloton. He survived La Redoute and on Roche aux Faucons he had to let go the favorites group just before the top. Xandro Meurisse returned in the Martin group and they finished the race as 33rd and 38th in the Gilbert-Kwiatkowski-Nibali group.

Jérôme Baugnies:

"When we took off after the start, I hoped it would be a long day. But with nine good riders we did not get too much free space from the pack, and then I felt that it would be difficult to get to La Redoute. I imposed the pace and thus took care of a reduction. "

"It was fun to ride up La Redoute alone. That gave me a good feeling, with my Walloon name and a Wanty-Groupe Gobert jersey I was encouraged loudly. Even when I was dropped everyone kept on shouting my name."

"The road after Le Redoute was all headwind, which killed me. Last week I heard TV analyst José De Cauwer say on Sporza:" Ah, Baugnies is finally there again! "People quickly forget that last year I crashed hard in Grand Prix de Wallonie. I come back from far, this is my proper answer to José. "

Guillaume Martin:

"The whole day the team was nicely concentrated in the peloton. I was brought to the front by a teammember at each ascent. On La Redoute I easily climbed up and on the Roche aux Faucons I only was dropped 400 meters from the top."

"At the top we were not too far behind, but the cooperation was lacking, probably because everyone was à-bloc. It is frustrating, but also encouraging as the level in my group was very high. Xandro Meurisse could return after our hesitations in my group and together we finished La Doyenne in the group that sprinted for place 23. "
