Gran Trittico Lombardo : Hermans in the attack, Bakelants 17th
The Grande Trittico Lombardo (1.Pro, 3/08) welcomed the peloton in Lombardy, on the common roads of the Tre Valli Varesine and the Coppa Agostini and Bernocchi. From the start in Legnano, five riders with Quinten Hermans attacked. The rain then watered the race and the peloton, which followed the leaders at more than 9 minutes. The race was opened on the Piccolo Stelvio, after 120 kilometers of racing, with the storm making the roads dangerously slippery. Only Bakelants and Meurisse resisted to the selection on the final course in Varese.

The breakaway was caught at the beginning of the final lap, due to the chase of Trek-Segafredo, Astana and CCC. Hermans won the intermediate sprint classification. With Xandro Meurisse being eliminated from the peloton due to a mechanical, Jan Bakelants finished in the first peloton in 17th place.

Quinten Hermans :

« Last Saturday I suffered from the heat. I wanted to make up for the Strade Bianche at this Grande Trittico Lombardi. Thanks to my enthousiasm, I was in the early breakaway. In the end, it wasn't a bad decision as we were only caught with one lap to go. With two or three strong riders more in the breakaway, we maybe could have made it until the finish. But anyway, other nice challenges are awaiting me, starting with the Critérium du Dauphiné next week. »

Jan Bakelants :

« It wasn't an easy day, because of the heavy rainfall. I've never seen this before, it was training caps and dogs, causing enormous splashes and flood. It made the race a lot harder than on paper. I didm't have a bad feeling, but I expected a little better. At the end, my legs took over control. I wasn't able to follow the 10 best, so I need to be satisfied with the second group. »

« The rain is not an excuse, because the conditions were the same for everyone. I didm't race for a long time and maybe it takes a little longer to get the rhythm back at the age of 34. This day was a good training for that's next. On Wednesday I'll be at the start of Milano-Torino, in service of our sprinters. We've got several cards to play, with Danny Van Poppel, Alfdan De Decker and Timothy Dupont. Afterwards, I hope to be at the start in Milan, with better capabilities! »
