Bad day for Danny Van Poppel This Sunday, Paris-Nice (2.UWT, 7-14 / 03) set off from Saint-Cyr-L'École, in the Yvelines, for an inaugural stage of 165 kilometers without major difficulty, except for the wind and a slight false flat uphill finish. Fabien Doubey (Direct Energie) had the courage to lead the race all by himself throughout the day, spending a hundred kilometers alone on the windy roads of Île-de-France. His lonely initiative doomed to failure was extended thanks to numerous incidents within the peloton, where nervousness took over as the perspective of a bunch sprint appeared imminent. In the last 50 kilometers, several attempts were launched in the hope of disrupting the planned scenario, but they all turned out to be unsuccessful. It was therefore at the end of an inevitable bunch sprint that the first leader of Paris-Nice was to be decided, and it was Sam Bennett (Deceuninck) who earned this privilege. Danny Van Poppel, the sprinter of Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert Matériaux, suffered throughout out the day and could not take part in the final.
